Closed Circuit Rebreather FAQ

Q: Is a CCR for me? Do “normal” people really use rebreathers?

A: CCR diving is not for everyone.  It requires a high level of attention and care to dive safely.  If you are willing to put the time and effort required into the training and proper procedures, then CCR diving can be enjoyed by just about anyone.

CCRs are becoming more and more popular as they become more affordable and accessible.  People use rebreathers for all different kinds of diving.  Anything from a nice relaxing Caribbean reef dive, to a 800 FSW wreck exploration dive.  Hardcore tech divers are not the only ones using CCRs any more. Everyone from the causal photographer, to the scientific diver, to the weekend warrior are using a CCR to help them take their diving to a new realm. Keep on reading to find out WHY people use these fascinating machines!

Q: What are the advantages to a CCR?

A: Ever wanted to dive with no bubbles?  What about diving with warm air that doesn’t dry your throat out?  How about the capability to stay under the water for hours, regardless of depth?  These are some of the benefits of diving a rebreather.

The are two main advantages to a closed circuit rebreather :  1) The recycling of your breathing gas.  This is where the term “rebreather” comes from.  The gas you exhale goes through the loop, through the CO2 scrubber and is returned for you to breathe again.  This offers obvious benefits being as you won’t have to carry nearly as much gas.  2) The CCR keeps your breathing gas at a constant PO2.  Those of you that have taken the nitrox course should understand this.  Basically the CCR unit is a “nitrox mixing machine” that is constantly changing the gas to give you the optimum mix for your given depth.  This means that you can get all the benefits of nitrox taken to the next level.
